"Deadpan" seeks to address the complex relationships between the natural world and the consumerism of the modern era. This work investigates the inherent draw of humanity towards magical thinking through things like ritualized smoking or the tossing of bones, and the mystery of the creative power of nature. There is also a pull to the power of cycles, juxtaposing elements of fragile new life and the specter of death within the structured arc of the wild broom and dustpan. The magic is found in the contradictions and the ways they are intricately tied together.
